The Leadership Lesson Behind The “Call it Out” Drill

At Pickleball Leadership, we’re all about showing how what happens on the court can make you a better leader off the court. Today’s leadership lesson comes straight from one of my favorite drills: The Call It Out Drill.

(What’s the Call It Out Drill?)

In this pickleball drill, players must call out who’s going to take the shot—loud and clear.

It sounds simple, but it’s a game-changer.

Why? Because it prevents confusion… and collisions.

There’s no guessing. No second-guessing.

Just clear, direct communication between partners.

(The Leadership Connection: Conflict Resolution Through Communication)

Good leaders know that avoiding a tough conversation doesn’t make the problem go away.

In fact, silence often makes things worse.

The best leaders call it out early.

They don’t wait for misunderstandings or frustration to build.

They speak up, address potential conflicts, and keep their team aligned and productive.

Just like in the Call It Out Drill, the key is clarity and communication.

Everyone knows what’s happening and who’s responsible for what.
